Origami-like Flowers

I learned how to do origami (paper folding) as a child and really enjoyed making all kinds of creatures out of a piece of paper.

I saw some fabric flowers that are made in a similar way (called kanzashi flowers) and just had to try it.(I can't find the link I used to make this, but I found another one here).

Here's my first kanzashi flower.

The best thing about these flowers is that you can make them with any fabric! I plan to make some flowers to match my little girl's dresses! They can also be made to dress up a purse or bag or even a pair of shoes for us big girls. The center could be anything - a button, a pearl or old earring - for added flair!

First Crocheted Flower

I had a baby girl back in May and found that while we were out and about, strangers would complement me on my adorable boy.

HUH?!?! Even if she was dressed head to toe in pink with a pink blanket and pink toy on her carseat, people still assumed she was a boy. It was a heartbreaking for me, a new mom!

The assumption must have come about because she had very little hair and what she did have was very light. I thought that I could put something in her hair...oh right, no hair. On to plan B...headbands!

I ordered headbands in several colors and busied myself making things to adorn them. I first started out with a basic crocheted flower called an Irish rose, which I found here. Then I added the rosette found here with hot glue to make the center. I put it on the headband and I had created some girly flair! I have made these in several colors and just love how they look!
